You have just passed limestone islands, highland mist, waterfall pools and quiet forest roads. The last word is not a viewpoint. It is this: a handful of Thai landscapes are still large enough, still connected enough, for an Indochinese tiger to move through them.

Most travellers will never see one. That is not a failed trip. It is the point of the parks — to keep the country wild enough that the chance remains, whether you are watching for elephants at dusk or simply walking a trail that something older still uses at night.
